It was a sickly warm Friday morning, the air hung close. I prised myself out of bed to get on with my day, cursing the sleep in my eyes. I turned on my phone to check the day’s news – Daredevil was back. Had Hollywood not learned from their mistakes? I hung my head in despair…
Yes Ben Affleck has been confirmed as Christian Bale’s replacement for Man of Steel 2/Batman Vs Superman and the world is furious.
After Affleck’s portrayal of Daredevil, one of the worst comic book adaptations in recent memory, many of us thought he’d never put on a lycra suit again. But Hollywood has other ideas.
“We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some,” WB president Greg Silverman said in a statement.
“Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne,” Snyder added, in a statement. “I can’t wait to work with him.”
To be fair to Affleck his acting since Daredevil has been stellar and one of his last outings, as an agent in Argo, was impressive. But does he have what it takes to play the grisled, washed up Batman as portrayed in the Dark Knight Returns graphic novel?
Only time will tell. The film airs July 17, 2015.
